The stories are written by those involved in the agricultural system of California, a mix of workers, mayordomos (a kind of foreman or crew-chief) and some of the farm owners. Walter, the narrator, suspects that three of the village’s young bachelors, Christopher and Thomas Derby and Brooker Higgs, are saw them coming back from the woods the previous night, consumed in “immodest fits of laughter,” and concluded that they’d been eating intoxicating mushrooms just as he used to do when he was a young man after the harvest was finished.
